Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

Although it is commonplace for women to notice some changes in mood across their menstrual cycle, western medicine is only now starting to realise how significantly premenstrual dysphoric disorder can affect someone’s life. Sufferers can find their lives dramatically disrupted for several weeks every month, but since those shifts happen so frequently, doctors can dismiss them as reflecting psychological or social stresses alone. This can delay diagnosis for years. The consequences for women with unrecognised PMDD can be dreadful.

Did You Know?

Many women with PMDD face delayed diagnosis because doctors often dismiss their symptoms as mere stress or psychological issues.

PMDD is sometimes considered to be an imbalance of hormones, but in fact it is more related to heightened sensitivity to hormonal changes. Because of this, blood tests may not help with diagnosis (although PMDD can be associated with a lower progesterone level).

Confidential & Supportive Care

Our team is aware that discussing reproductive health difficulties may initially feel uncomfortable and private; we can offer a confidential, discreet, and supportive option for women who require this service.

Talking with our specialist team of mental health clinicians and GPs can be the first step to ensure that any other comorbid illnesses are identified and fully managed. This allows a clearer differentiation of symptoms that may primarily reflect PMDD. Then taking a careful history and using mood diaries will be key.
