Menopause

Hormone fluctuations are widely accepted as part of female fertility, and yet it is only recently that the impact these fluctuations have on mental health has been prioritised. Oestrogen and progesterone are not just related to reproduction—receptors for these hormones are throughout the brain. Yet specialist input for women’s mental health in the context of the menstrual cycle and menopause is still not consistent or widely available. Our team at Women First Healthcare aims to explore and support clients’ physical, psychological and mental health while recognising the impact of their hormonal changes on all these aspects.

Understanding Menopause

Natural menopause is the permanent cessation of menstrual periods after 12 months with no other obvious pathological or physiological cause. It is a natural part of ageing that usually happens between the ages of 45 and 55 years old.

Premature Menopause

Premature menopause (before the age of 40 years old) and early menopause (before the age of 45 years old) are conditions where a woman, or person assigned female at birth goes through menopause at an earlier age than is typically expected. Some reasons may be surgery, certain health conditions, family history of menopause at an early age or cancer, but sometimes the cause is unknown.

Perimenopause

Perimenopause means ‘around menopause.’ This is the time that your body makes the natural transition to menopause; your body and menstrual cycle may begin to change, you become less fertile, and your hormones fluctuate. Women can experience this transition to menopause at different ages.

Menopause Symptoms & Treatment

Symptoms are individual to each woman and can include unpleasant physical and mental health difficulties. For those who require it, the main treatment for menopausal symptoms is hormone replacement therapy (HRT), but we know that not all women need it or have been advised that they are not suitable for prescribing. Some women may prefer alternative treatment options, which might not be widely available. Our specialist team aims to assist in developing an individualised and holistic treatment plan with you.
