ADHD Assessment for Adults (18 years old+)

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition that affects people's behaviour. People with ADHD can seem restless, may have trouble concentrating and may act on impulse. We provide specialised assessments and management plans for ADHD, offering tailored support to help women better understand and manage their condition.

Assessment

Understanding the ADHD Assessment

We are all aware of the huge numbers of people waiting for ADHD assessments across the UK. One issue contributing to these enormous delays is the complexity of each ADHD assessment.

The symptoms associated with ADHD affect all of us to some extent at some point in our lives, and making a diagnosis of ADHD requires an understanding of when these symptoms reach the severity to constitute illness.

Diagnostic Challenges

In addition, many of the symptoms associated with ADHD are similar to those of other mental and physical conditions, requiring careful assessment in order to make an accurate diagnosis.

Finally, it is common for ADHD to occur together with other mental health conditions, which means that identifying and managing each disorder fully takes a sophisticated approach.

This is why a thorough assessment for ADHD takes time and requires a high level of training and clinical experience.

Our Assessment Process

Our team will approach your ADHD assessment with the care and expertise required to fully understand your symptoms and how they affect you. The first step is to carry out a full mental health assessment. The second step involves your ADHD assessment. At each point, our aim is to tailor these appointments to you as an individual.

Treatment

Once you have completed your full ADHD assessment, we will discuss treatment options with you. Incremental prescription of medication doses, and monitoring of side effects, can be carried out by many of our skilled specialists within our service. If you prefer for this stage to taken forward within the NHS, we would be happy to have your local Community Mental Health team access our documentation. However you will need to ensure that this is feasible within your area.

Titrate your Medication

We are also happy to arrange to titrate your ADHD medication with you, with follow up appointments, and we can discuss with you the charges for the different medication options. Since there is variation with the mode of action and the cost of different ADHD medications, we will want to agree together what would suit you best. There is also flexibility with how you prefer to receive your prescriptions.

Alternative Treatment Options

There can be many reasons that medication may not be the best option in managing ADHD. There are a range of other ways we will be able to help you with your symptoms, including:

Environmental modifications
Psychological work
Occupational therapy advice
Mindfulness techniques
Group work
Signposting to suitable online resources

Combining Medication with Psychological Treatment

There may also be value in combining medication with psychological treatment, to get the best outcome for you. We will think with you about what treatment plan is likely to meet your individual needs.

ADHD in Women

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. ADHD can look different in some women, and there are many reasons why; these include:

Inattention (internalising symptoms)

In women, these symptoms are more present than hyperactivity symptoms; therefore, women who experience this type of ADHD are more likely to go unnoticed by others.

Hyperactivity (externalising symptoms)

Young women and girls are more likely to 'mask’ difficulties and can present as sociable, chatty, or outgoing, resulting in symptoms going unnoticed.

Hormones

ADHD manifests differently during the course of a woman’s life, from puberty, pregnancy, breastfeeding, to menopause. Hormonal fluctuations can influence the presentation and impact of ADHD but are rarely considered.

Social

Girls who experienced hyperactive type ADHD may have experienced stigma or punishment due to gender stereotypes and the behaviour being out with what was expected of them.

Misdiagnosis

Women with ADHD may have been misdiagnosed and treated for something other than an attention deficit; these can include emotionally unstable personality disorder, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and/or depression.

Comorbid Mental Health Difficulties

The presence of comorbidities can affect the presentation of ADHD symptoms and can sometimes even mask the presence of ADHD. Due to ADHD being unrecognised in childhood, women may then experience symptoms of depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem, often associated with the feeling that they have little control over their lives. Although these diagnoses can co-exist, the overlap of symptoms can result in ADHD being unrecognised, and women can find it difficult to access the right support for their difficulties.

What We Offer?

High-quality diagnostic assessment and treatment that aligns with evidence-based guidelines.

Our team has, over many years in practice, developed specialist knowledge, supplemented by additional training in the assessment and diagnosis of ADHD disorder and the distinct symptom presentation in women with ADHD.

Our person-centred screening process will ensure that you are matched to the most appropriate clinician for your assessment.

Each professional has different areas of expertise, so we can combine our skillsets and are more likely to identify areas of need, including trauma, emotional distress, self-esteem, hormone fluctuations, and eating habits, and subsequently manage those needs in a more effective way.

Our multidisciplinary team meets regularly, and we do this to ensure that all factors are considered prior to offering diagnosis and that you have a care plan best suited to meeting your needs
